Wild sambar deer spotted along mandai road. Many of the sambar deer have been relocated successfully into various national parks. It is estimated that there are fewer than 20 sambar deer in singapore. Over the years, the deer has been spotted only a handful times, around mandai lake road, bukit brown cemetery, near macritchie nature reserve. Spotted by me and my friend (raziq) at the mandai trail on 26 aug 18. Males can grow up to 2 metres tall. Appears to be a male and female pair. Sambar deer is one of the largest members of deer family. The sambar (rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to the indian subcontinent, south china, and southeast asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the iucn red list since 2008. Sightings of rare animals are really hard to come by and it's not every day that you see a wild deer in singapore.
